Computer systems, simulation, and robots among people
Bucknell, especially the College of Engineering, places immense value on student-centered pedagogies and on integrating the technical education we offer with a broader liberal arts context. I chose to join the university because my views and values align perfectly with these institutional priorities. I have been here for quite some time teaching in the area of computer systems and studying modeling & simulation, human-robot interaction, and technology in society.

Recent research
HRIWith Sean O’Connor, I worked on HRIStudio, a web-based platform for collaborative and reproducible Wizard-of-Oz studies in human-robot interaction. We have presented our work at IEEE RO-MAN 2024 and 2025.
Most recently, with Nicole Qian, I have been investigating issues on the philosophical side of HRI such as robot ethics, trust, personhood, and consciousness.
Modeling & simulation
Network simulation, experiment automation, and tools that make simulation studies credible.
Human-robot interaction
Wizard-of-Oz tools and studies, and RoboLab, our HRI discussion group.
Society & technology
Ethics, privacy, and what computing means for everyday life.
Over the years I have taught 24 different courses at Bucknell, mostly in computer systems: computer organization, operating systems, networks, and security. I am also passionate about interdisciplinary courses on computers and society, where I bring in applied ethics, moral philosophy, sci-fi literature, and international education. Three times I have taught ENGR 290 Engineering in a Global and Societal Context on the road: Brazil (2010), Italy (2015), and Italy and France (2024).
I prefer student-centric pedagogies: rather than lecture at students, I create opportunities for them to grapple directly with the material.
